There's definetely something very good going on in the music scene of Republic of Karelia in northwest Russia and this tape is a good proof of that. Sashash Ulz's side is all lo-fi new age music, very simple and so very beautiful. Like a drift that you wish would never end. кот кот manages to create something even more simple, even primitive, with what appears to be acoustic instruments and some effects. Sometimes, persistence really pays off in the end. Jooklo-contributor luca massolin worked for ages on putting together a release for digitalis and just when it seemed like it might not come together, this absolute gem turned up. "Kaleidopea" is as accomplished as golden cup has ever been. Chattering walls of synth debris find the perfect balance between foreign and familiar leading you down diamond paths. Just when it feels like everything is closing in around you, massolin breaks out the guitar and you're in a different place entirely.things really cook as the inimitable sachiko adds her voice to the mix. again, it's all in the balance. On the flipside, hypnotic synth underpinnings are the perfect canvas for massolin's delay-strewn guitar and sachiko's incredible voice. As the synth repeats over and over it leaves plenty of room for the guitar and voice to interact and suck you under. It's disjointed enough to keep you from totally drifting away, each off-kilter moment snapping you back to reality, but overall the effect is pretty goddamn mesmerising. Eventually we all settle down and get lost in the waves. Unbelievable. [press-release]

The album is tributed to the Russian «ghost-towns» Kadykchan, Kursha-2 and Halmer-U. Kadykchan («Death Valley» in Evenk) is a miners urban village in Susuman district of Magadan region, which was left by the inhabitants after the mine detonation in 1996. Nowadays only a few native people live in this dead town without central heating and water and power supply in half-destroyed apartments. Kursha-2 was build shortly after the Russian Revolution as a workers village for mastering vast forests of the Central Meshera. In the year 1936, during hot and windy summer, 1200 humans were burnt out alive because of the forest fire that surrounded Kursha and outskirts. Halmer-U («Death Valley» in Nenets) is situated in the area that was used by natives as a burial place for centuries. In the end of 20th century it became another «not wanted» miners town. People were evicted to Vorkuta city by riot squads. Three tracks of disturbing static oppression. All-dead Drone Ambient and sizzling Drone Noise dressing you alive. VELEHENTOR is well-known for its skill in creating the proper atmosphere using only facts, and here it is reproducted as by a direct witness. [press-release]
