The new release of the young Russian label Valgriind is a debut recording of a project with an epic title Bashnya Ledyanyh Voronov ("Icy Ravens Tower" in Russian). Three tracks recorded live apparently on a dictaphone. The 1st track "Gates to the crystal vast" contains slow mouth harp playing accompanied by female voice, singing a wordless song. A feeling of something winter-Slavonic... The 2nd track "Rising up the snow-clad steps towards the non-existence" really contains the recording of steps, wind, something crackles, knocks during almost 6 minutes. The 3rd track "Emptiness of icy silence" - again long monotonous mouth harp piece. Minimalism. Packed in a slim-box with attached foil rune.

Field recordings made in workshops and fields, railroads and under water, clanks and drones of metal constructions, steel rhythms, roar of motors and abrasive rasps, atmospheric pieces of folk and academic music. Locomotive operation and recording of it's sound on the 5th track done by the machinist, coal heaver and musician Sergey Gabbasov (Bardo, Vazhes). Retrograde, mostly analogue sound. The long-avaited second part of the series dedicated to during expeditions and walks. The city of Khibinogorsk (now Kirovsk) was built on Kola peninsula, among Khibiny mountains in the late 1920s - early 1930s by "special migrants" (agrarians who were exiled from Central Russia during Stalin's collectivisation). The nucleus of the city was Apatite-nepheline concentrating factory ANOF-1 - the first enterprise of such a kind which was intended to let USSR get rid of necessity to import chemical fertilizers. In 1931 Khibinogorsk recieved a status of city and the factory started its work. In December 1939 a giant building of railway station was opened. It had splendid interior with parquetry, marble walls and bronze chandeliers and received trains from Moscow and Leningrad. But gradually the importance of the city went down, it gave its role away to the neighbour city of Apatity which was esatblished in 1959 12 kilometers far from Khibinogorsk. In the 60-s direct trains between Kirovsk and the capitals were abolished, in the late 80s the railway station was abandoned, in early 90s same happened with the factory. Nowadays the city is significant only with ski resorts and monumental ruins... A collaboration release between two industrial projects includes a disc with live recording of performance / live without audience at ANOF-1; a cassette with a studio album asembled exclusively from recordings made there with analogue tape recorder; a disc which includes almost 200 historical pictures of Khibinogorsk and a scanned book about the city from 1933 and a photo insert.  Catacomb old-school industrial with totally analogue sound, built on metal percussion, squeals and buzzes of electro-engines, radionoise and tape loops. A song about locomotive and proletarian-futuristic verses are inserted between the industrial tracks. The 4th composition is a live transmission from the workshop where hard and sweating all over, but well-organized and gaily the locomotive is being born. Deliberately lo-fi quality, but with the burning eyes! [label info] Recorded and mixed on 29th November 2002 in Leningrad. Limited to 50 handnumbered copies in full-colored envelope with 19,1x26,5 cm poster. Previously released on cassette on YAOP in 2002 and was limited to 10 copies.
