The new release of the young Russian label Valgriind is a debut recording of a project with an epic title Bashnya Ledyanyh Voronov ("Icy Ravens Tower" in Russian). Three tracks recorded live apparently on a dictaphone. The 1st track "Gates to the crystal vast" contains slow mouth harp playing accompanied by female voice, singing a wordless song. A feeling of something winter-Slavonic... The 2nd track "Rising up the snow-clad steps towards the non-existence" really contains the recording of steps, wind, something crackles, knocks during almost 6 minutes. The 3rd track "Emptiness of icy silence" - again long monotonous mouth harp piece. Minimalism. Packed in a slim-box with attached foil rune.

Sometimes, persistence really pays off in the end. Jooklo-contributor luca massolin worked for ages on putting together a release for digitalis and just when it seemed like it might not come together, this absolute gem turned up. "Kaleidopea" is as accomplished as golden cup has ever been. Chattering walls of synth debris find the perfect balance between foreign and familiar leading you down diamond paths. Just when it feels like everything is closing in around you, massolin breaks out the guitar and you're in a different place entirely.things really cook as the inimitable sachiko adds her voice to the mix. again, it's all in the balance. On the flipside, hypnotic synth underpinnings are the perfect canvas for massolin's delay-strewn guitar and sachiko's incredible voice. As the synth repeats over and over it leaves plenty of room for the guitar and voice to interact and suck you under. It's disjointed enough to keep you from totally drifting away, each off-kilter moment snapping you back to reality, but overall the effect is pretty goddamn mesmerising. The long-avaited second part of the series dedicated to during expeditions and walks. The city of Khibinogorsk (now Kirovsk) was built on Kola peninsula, among Khibiny mountains in the late 1920s - early 1930s by "special migrants" (agrarians who were exiled from Central Russia during Stalin's collectivisation). The nucleus of the city was Apatite-nepheline concentrating factory ANOF-1 - the first enterprise of such a kind which was intended to let USSR get rid of necessity to import chemical fertilizers. In 1931 Khibinogorsk recieved a status of city and the factory started its work. In December 1939 a giant building of railway station was opened. It had splendid interior with parquetry, marble walls and bronze chandeliers and received trains from Moscow and Leningrad. But gradually the importance of the city went down, it gave its role away to the neighbour city of Apatity which was esatblished in 1959 12 kilometers far from Khibinogorsk. In the 60-s direct trains between Kirovsk and the capitals were abolished, in the late 80s the railway station was abandoned, in early 90s same happened with the factory. Nowadays the city is significant only with ski resorts and monumental ruins... A collaboration release between two industrial projects includes a disc with live recording of performance / live without audience at ANOF-1; a cassette with a studio album asembled exclusively from recordings made there with analogue tape recorder; a disc which includes almost 200 historical pictures of Khibinogorsk and a scanned book about the city from 1933 and a photo insert. Karsten Hamre is a very busy person. Through the years, the list of names and titles he's worked with have increased exponentially-- each band and title an exploration of a sound and ambience that was destined to become solely his own. From the quixotic brilliance of Penitent, to the dark elegance of Veiled Allusions, and now also a solo project bearing only his name. What often is remembered most about Hamre's work is an ambience that always feels nautical. There is ever a sense of vast, oceanic space. It is expressed in various ways through his works, but it seems always to be there. Many of the sounds seem to come from under water, or inner water. They hint at the dark things hidden in our histories, in our religions; in the decayed and rotting backyard pools of post- Apocalypse suburbia. Karsten Hamre takes a minimalist approach to his typically lush (albeit delightfully creepy) soundscapes. The result reminds me of works such as Geir Jenssen's "Biosphere", with bits of Lustmord and K.K. Null thrown in for both ominous rhythm and outer darkness... Vlad Jecan manages to combine sounds of different types and horizons, distorted sonorities who yet express profound calmness, a fast slide of cosmic images placed in front of your eyes and just then you will hear sounds that reflect the grey emotions lurking inside yourself.
